Is the Check Engine Light on a Dodge Charger Defective?
In most cases, the Charger’s MIL is functioning correctly—it turns on because the PCM logged a fault. Typical reasons include misfires, EVAP leaks, O2 sensor issues or transmission errors. Only after diagnosing and repairing the cause should you clear the light.
- Find the code: Use an OBD-II scanner to read DTCs before resetting.
- Inspect basics: Gas cap, ignition coils, spark plugs, vacuum hoses, and throttle body.
- Flashing light: Indicates misfire—reduce throttle and fix immediately.
- After repair: Clear with a scan tool, then complete a drive cycle so readiness monitors return to “complete.”
If the light comes back after a proper repair, revisit the diagnostic flow or check for PCM updates. Otherwise, the MIL itself rarely fails—focus on the underlying fault.
